I am a Certified Doula and a Mother of 5, I homeschool and live an holistic lifestyle. I have a big heart for women especially if you are expecting and taking care of your children. I set out to offer support to families because an extra pair of hands and attention is very necessary. If you have a Doula there to support your birth vision you will have the feeling of reassurance while in your journey. Some women will hire a Doula for themselves. In this case she may feel more comfortable with having a woman who is familiar with the birthing process there to coach her through it by giving support, suggestions of certain labor techniques and making sure Mommy’s voice is heard. On the contrary, some women will hire a Doula to help take care of their spouse. The Doula could help coach the spouse in how to comfort Mommy. Some Mommies really want their spouse to be the main comfort while giving birth. So what ever need that you may have during your labor , a Doula’s job is to help you fulfill it. A Doula is an incredible source of support. A Doula is a woman who is in support of your birth plan. A Doula is knowledgeable and comfortable with the birthing environment. So, I will assist you in many questions and concerns that you or your family may have. A Doula makes sure that the Mother feels confident in her pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. Many women are faced with depression while pregnant due to lack of support. Also, many women face post traumatic depression. Doulas take the time to understand Mommy and help Mommy get to the point of feeling like she has a voice that is heard and a respected stance as a Mother. Doula’s are their to help Mommy take charge of what she is equipped to do. Often times women are scared based off thoughts alone and can wind up of in preventable birth experiences. A Doula is there to help Mommy and her family keep the peace of mind and help them welcome their addition because a new baby changes lives but the change can be peaceful.
The greatest benefit comes when a birthing woman has continuous support from someone who is
a) not a family member or social network,
b) not a hospital staff
Here is what this study found:
When a woman has the continuous support of a doula, the pitocin use goes down 31%, the cesarean rate decreases 28%, there is a 12% increase in spontaneous vaginal births, a 9% decrease in medications for pain relief, a 14% decrease in newborns being admitted to a special care nursery and finally, a 34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience.
To say it even more simply:
Doulas lessen your chance of having a c-section.
Doulas decrease pain during birth... aka, When you have a doula, your birth doesn't hurt as much!!
Doulas lessen the duration of labor... aka, make birth go more quickly!
Doulas helps women feel better about their birth.
